Delphine Casabonne

Delphine Casabonne holds a degree in Mathematics (Pau, France, 1998), a Master in Statistics (University College London, UK, 1999), and a PhD in Cancer Epidemiology on the seroepidemiology of human-papillomavirus in relation to non-melanoma skin cancer (University of London-QMUL, UK, 2009).

From 1999 to 2009 she worked at the Cancer Epidemiology Unit at the Oxford University (CRUK, previously ICRF) as a medical statistician mainly focusing on the association between infections and cancers using data from case-control studies in Uganda and Malawi as well as working on cancer risk factors in large cohort studies (EPIC and the Million Women Study).

In 2009 she joined the haematological malignancy research group at the Cancer Epidemiology Research Program (PREC) of the Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO/IDIBELL) as a postdoc under CIBERESP. Her research is centered on the use of epidemiological approaches to study risk factors associated with the aetiology of haematological cancers with a particular interest in B-cell precursor stages. She aims to get a better understanding of the interactions between infectious agents and the immune system and to identify the factors involved in the progression from early precursor stages to cancer and cancer survival. Since 2016, she is responsable of the haematological malignancy research group at PREC.

Dr Casabonne leads new efforts to develop cohort and case-control studies on B-cell precursors to identify the environmental, lifestyle, infectious, genetic and biological factors (IBERISAL and IBERICAT studies) associated with these conditions and the progression to cancer aiming to identify preventive measures. This work is done in collaboration with the Salamanca Cancer Research Center (CIC), the ICO centers and the Hospital de Sant Joan Despí Moisès Broggi. Dr Casabonne collaborates in different epidemiological studies and consortium: the Spanish Multicase-Control Study (MCC-Spain) on chronic lymphocytic leukemia analyzing the influence of environmental factors and their interaction with genetic factors in five cancers; the evaluation of the environmental and occupational exposures associated to lymphoma risk as part of the European Study of Lymphomas (EpiLymph); the GenRisk Network, which compiles and analyzes genetic biomarkers as cancer risk factors in order to shape future prevention strategies; the consortia INTERLYMPH and CRUCIAL, to examine environmental and genetic factors associated with different haematological cancers; the lymphoma and leukemia working group of the EPIC study to examine prospectively risk factors as well as biomarkers associated with subsequent haematological cancers; as well as other projects in collaboration with ISglobal (infection acquisition in early life and health outcomes and COVID-19 studies).
