Predoc
Irene Onieva holds a Biology degree (Autonomous University of Barcelona-UAB, 2021) and a Master in Advanced Genetics (Autonomous University of Barcelona-UAB, 2022).
During her studies in Biology, in 2021 she did 5 months of internship at the Department of Genetics and Microbiology of the Autonomous University of Barcelona-UAB. She conducted a small study on the effects of nanoplastics on human health using in vitro models, directed by Dr. Alba Hernández Bonilla.
In 2022 she joined the Screenwide group which is integrated in the Cancer Epidemiology Research Program (PREC) of the Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO/IDIBELL), where she completed her Master’s thesis on "Genomic exploitation of new non-invasive methods for the early detection of endometrial cancer" under the supervision of Dr. Laura Costas and Dr. Sònia Paytubi. Her main activity was developed in the laboratory, specifically in the extraction of cfDNA and gDNA from urine and tumor samples, respectively, the preparation of libraries, capture and enrichment of target DNA.
Since 2022 she is a PhD student in Medicine and Translational Research at the University of Barcelona-UB in the Screenwide group. She continues with the research related to her Master’s thesis, which expands the number of samples and includes also ovarian cancer. The title of the thesis is “New non-invasive test for early detection of endometrial and ovarian cancer based on genomic exploitation of urine samples”.
Her current research topic is on endometrial and ovarian cancer non-invasive detection.
