Juval Avala earned a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Life Sciences from Marien Ngouabi University, Brazzaville, Congo, in 2014, followed by a Master's degree in Biochemistry and Applied Immunology from the same university in 2016, and a Master’s in Infectious Diseases and Public Health at the Central Africa Regional Doctoral School of Tropical Infectiology, Franceville, Gabon, in 2018. There, he began research on human papillomavirus and anogenital cancers, investigating the genetic diversity of human papillomavirus (HPV) 35 among healthy heterosexual and HIV-infected men who have sex with men in Central Africa.

In 2019, he received a bilateral Chinese Scholarship Council (CSC) scholarship to pursue his PhD at Harbin Medical University. Since 2023, Juval Avala has held a PhD in Pathogenic Organisms (field of Infectious Diseases) from Harbin Medical University. He was awarded the 2023 Top Ten Outstanding Students of Harbin Medical University, Harbin, China, and placed 3rd at the International Olympiad “Medicine and English languages,” Voronezh, Russia.

In 2023, after completing his PhD, Dr. Avala joined the Parasitology and Molecular Epidemiology Department, Division of Preventive Medicine and Clinical Trials, at the National Laboratory of Public Health; and the Health Technologies Department, Ministry of Health and Population, Brazzaville, Congo, as an intern focused on HPV molecular screening strategies, leading a project titled “Prevalence of HPV and abnormal cytology among women living with HIV in the Gambia”. From 2025, he also served as a scientific consultant for V-Veil company in Romania, in collaboration with Prof. Laurent Belec at the Medical and Molecular Virology Laboratory at the European Hospital Georges Pompidou in Paris, France. There, he worked closely to evaluate novel tools for HPV self-sampling screening and diagnosis in African samples, improving molecular HPV screening in Sub-Saharan Africa: self-sampling techniques and clinical implications using the V-Veil UP2™ device, and the implementation of a large-scale, community-based screening program for HR-HPV and STIs among adult women, using an innovative and secure digital and logistical workflow for the European population. He was awarded the 2025 Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) YY Study grant as a visiting scientist to join ICO/IDIBELL, Spain, in July 2026 to evaluate HR-HPV antibody levels and 9-valent cross-protection in HPV-positive women.

Juval Avala has more than 7 years of research experience in HPV prevention, focusing on HPV screening, diagnosis, and epidemiological strategies. He combines epidemiological methods (study design and statistical analysis) with molecular techniques (PCR) to generate reliable data in resource-limited settings. Since 2022, he has served as a board member of the Organization of African Academic Doctors (OAAD) for the oncology and cancer research branch.

In 2026, He joined ICO/IDIBELL as a postdoctoral researcher working on the RIFT project.
